[Davical-general] adding a CardDAV contact fails since Mavericks OS X 10.9

Thomas S.
Hi,

I am running a DAViCal 1.1.1 Server on Debian Wheezy (original package from Debian repo) with DAViCal_GIT-latest.tgz (2013-05-14) patches from http://www.inf-it.com/davical/.
While my address book and calendar worked fine so far with iOS7 and OS X 10.8 I am now experiencing that adding a contact using the address book on OS X 10.9 fails.

The Apache access log shows:
"POST /davical/caldav.php/thomas/addresses/?add-member HTTP/1.1" 401 1745 "-" "Mac OS X/10.9 (13A603) AddressBook/1365"
"POST /davical/caldav.php/thomas/addresses/?add-member HTTP/1.1" 405 1045 "-" "Mac OS X/10.9 (13A603) AddressBook/1365“

The error log shows:
davical: LOG: :Response status 405 for POST /davical/caldav.php/thomas/addresses/?add-member
davical: LOG: :***************** Response Header ****************
davical: LOG: headers:-->X-Powered-By: PHP/5.4.4-14+deb7u5
davical: LOG: headers:-->Server: 1.1
davical: LOG: headers:-->DAV: 1, 2, 3, access-control, calendar-access, calendar-schedule
davical: LOG: headers:-->DAV: extended-mkcol, bind, addressbook, calendar-auto-schedule, calendar-proxy
davical: LOG: headers:-->X-DAViCal-Version: DAViCal/1.1.1; DB/1.2.11
davical: LOG: headers:-->Content-type: text/xml; charset="utf-8"
davical: LOG: :******************** Response ********************
davical: LOG: response:--><?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
davical: LOG: response:--><error xmlns="DAV:">
davical: LOG: response:-->  <method-not-allowed/>You may not PUT to a collection URL
davical: LOG: response:--></error>

The Address Book App itself is logging:
[NSInvalidArgumentException] -[CoreDAVNullParser rootElement]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x618000010e40

comparing this with the access log output from Apache when adding a contact via iOS7 shows that the address book behaves totally different - see a correct output below:

"OPTIONS /davical/caldav.php/thomas/ HTTP/1.1" 401 1745 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0"
"OPTIONS /davical/caldav.php/thomas/ HTTP/1.1" 200 1045 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0"
"PROPFIND /davical/caldav.php/thomas/ HTTP/1.1" 401 837 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0"
"PROPFIND /davical/caldav.php/thomas/ HTTP/1.1" 207 1333 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0"
"PROPFIND /davical/caldav.php/thomas/ HTTP/1.1" 207 1668 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0"
"PUT /davical/caldav.php/thomas/addresses/AA47B481-39DD-4A78-92BC-57FBEB89F0EE.vcf HTTP/1.1" 201 788 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0"
"REPORT /davical/caldav.php/thomas/addresses/ HTTP/1.1" 207 1060 "-" "iOS/7.0.3 (11B511) dataaccessd/1.0“

The contacts are being synced correctly on Mavericks but only adding fails - does anybody have a hint for me please?

Thanks
Thomas

David Newman
Same here. I cannot create a new contact on a machine running Mavericks.

My DAViCal setup and error messages are the same as Thomas'.

Re: adding a CardDAV contact fails since Mavericks OS X 10.9

Jacob Lister
In reply to this post by Thomas S.
We confirm that this issue is still present in the latest stable Davical
release (1.1.2).  We've recently upgraded Davical from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2
which fixed a very similar issue (creating address book entires for
MacOS 10.8, Mountain Lion).  Seems Apple have done it again and broken
their application with the latest major operating system release (10.9,
Mavericks).

Here are the Apache logs we see for Davical 1.1.2:

Access Sequence for MacOS 10.8 (works):

202.160.48.14 - [hidden email] [31/Oct/2013:16:38:29 +1300] "POST
/caldav.php/caldavtest%40on.net.nz/addresses/4db57339-9260-4dfc-9e24-7d09fd77ac2e.vcf
HTTP/1.1" 201 -
202.160.48.14 - [hidden email] [31/Oct/2013:16:38:30 +1300]
"REPORT /caldav.php/caldavtest%40on.net.nz/addresses/ HTTP/1.1" 207 388

Access Sequence for MacOS 10.9 (fails):

202.160.48.14 - [hidden email] [31/Oct/2013:13:09:55 +1300] "POST
/caldav.php/caldavtest%40on.net.nz/addresses/?add-member HTTP/1.1" 403 92

Re: adding a CardDAV contact fails since Mavericks OS X 10.9

Carsten Pohle
Hi,

Ján Máté (?) confirmed via IRC that Apple changed the way contacts are
created on the server from PUT to POST requests, requiring a patch to
Davical.

This change seems being an adoption of something Google introduced as an
"improvement" to its Google Contacts CardDAV API, and thus we should not
expect considering Apple this as a bug:

http://googledevelopers.blogspot.de/2013/10/improvements-for-carddav.html

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5995.txt

Personally, I lack the experience and source knowledge of davical
neccessary for developing a patch. I don't know whether someone is
already working on this topic.

Best regards

Carsten

Two other findings:

1. Even reaching a contacts list on a DAViCal server returns a similar
error. This is just after starting Contacts.app:

NSInvalidArgumentException] -[CoreDAVNullParser rootElement]:
unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x60000041bd70

2. Calendar.app appears to work OK in Mavericks. No problem creating and
deleting calendar entries between Mavericks and Mountain Lion and iOS 7
devices.

Re: adding a CardDAV contact fails since Mavericks OS X 10.9

David Newman
In reply to this post by Carsten Pohle
I regret to report that contact retrieval and creation is still broken
using the new Mavericks release, OS X 10.9.1. This is with DAViCal 1.1.2
with Ján Máté's 20130514 patches.

I lack the skills to fix this myself but if anyone is working on a fix
I'd be happy to test it out.

Then again: Where are we with DAViCal? Given Ján Máté's confirmation of
a change on Apple's and Google's part, and given a lack of active
development on DAViCal, is it time to start considering alternatives?

That would be regrettable, as DAViCal works OK for devices that don't
run Mavericks.

thanks

I have been using DAViCal for a few years, and now I am interested in
contributing to the code base. To follow up on David's question, can
someone summarize the status of DAViCal development?
Who controls the git repo?
Where is the wiki nowadays?
What is the procedure for sending patches?
What is the procedure for producing releases?

Thanks,

Mihai

I confirm, that I can now add new contacts using the contacts.app under Mac OS
X 10.9.1 (aka Maverick).

Thanks a lot for your work!

Thanks -- this fixes the Contacts bug in Mavericks, but now calendars
have some problems. I'll post these in a separate email.

Hi,

finally I also found time to apply these patches and do some quick tests on them. Did not found any quirks around here and do not expect others - thanks everyone who contributed on this!

Although I can not help with this particular topic, since I don't use
macs, the same question stirs my mind. I'm too using davical for some
time now and wanted to get a bit more involved, but I find it even
difficult to post at this mailing list. For now I just posted my
findings, but even that wasn't without difficulties, since each post was
held back for approval. I asked Andrew directly how to get a 'real'
member on the list, but I've read on several posts that he isn't
maintaining the project anymore?. I admit, I've been busy with other
things and have some catching up to do on reading posts, but can someone
shed some light on this?
I have seen most of the commits are still from Andrew only that branch
about sending invitation emails (handle_remote_attendees) seems to be
driven by a Milan Medlik. I couldn't find his name in the mailing list,
does he work with or for Andrew and is is he still on this, since the
last commits there are two months old?

Cheers, Christian
